I’ve talked the last few weeks about the benefits and uses for aromatherapy and essential oils for Spoonies. Today I’m going to talk about other aspects of managing chronic disease and fatigue.

I’ve been in a nasty flare for over a month now. The fatigue can best be described as “soul crushing.” It is not an exaggeration when I say that it takes me half an hour to get out of bed. It’s also accompanied by pain. Every muscle, every joint, every minute of every day. It’s not fair, nobody should have to live like this. Yes, I’m grateful for all my blessings, I’m thrilled to have my love at home and healthy (enough). But I’m also angry. Chronic illness fatigue can make anybody angry at the whole world, and envious of “other” people. That’s OK, it’s not fair, at all, and it’s OK to feel that.

That said, this is the hand I’ve been dealt and the question becomes, “How am I gonna play it?”

Lately I’ve dipped into depression, despondency, and just plain old whineyness. I can barely stand to be around myself. So I have decided to play my hand differently. There comes a time when you just have to “Cowgirl Up” stop complaining and just do it. Joints and muscles ache, take some ibuprophen and go on. Feeling lethargic? Drink another cup of coffee and get on with life (I have a startling tolerance for caffeine). Bored (we’re usually traveling this time of year), pick a hobby and get lost for awhile. Go wander around, kill monsters, and find treasure (computer games). Grocery trip left me so exhausted I can’t think of the word for it (oogie is all that comes to mind and I’m pretty sure it’s a real word), for Pete’s sake stop trying to impress the world with how well you manage and GO LAY DOWN for 20 minutes.

The point I’m trying to make with this mini rant is that life ain’t fair, chronic illness is seldom a “happily ever after” story, but there are lots of things I can do to improve my circumstances. Ways to fight back and live the best life I can. “Every year 2 million people die of dehydration. So it doesn’t matter if the glass is half full or half empty, there’s water in the cup.   1. My thoughts go to you. And maybe you haven’t got what I had, but for 13 years I was debilitated with chronic fatigue syndrome, the last 8 of those years, 90% housebound, settee-bound (it hurt to lay in bed, but I could loll propped on the sofa). I understand the depression chronic pain causes, the despondency, and yes, the cry of It’s not fair.
    I was lucky, I found a cure. Simple, I changed my diet. But even then it’s been hard work to get back into something approaching my former shape. Not helped by the deterioration of age now eroding me.
    So yea, I can feel for you.

    1. Thank you, I’m so glad you found an alternative treatment. I have sarcoidosis (don’t worry NOBODY’s ever heard of it.) It’s an autoimmune disease known for mimicking other diseases. Right now it’s mimicking lupus. I have all the symptoms, right down to the blood work. I had it well controlled with diet, exercise, when I was first diagnosed in 2002, I went on a low carb diet, lost 80 lbs (of which I’ve kept off 65) and within a few years got it pretty well under control. May I ask what type of diet you found helpful? I’ve followed an anti-inflammatory/flexitarian diet ever since and it works pretty well but apparently the strain of the past several months with Superhubs surgeries, strokes, seizures, etc. has knocked my immune system for a real loop. πŸ˜‰ lol

      1. Having been diagnosed with type II diabetes, my reaction was NO, I’m not having that. So, research. I cut all obvious sugar, then I cut grains, then I cut all processed foods. I also cut beta-blockers and statins, which deplete the cells mitochondria. And things were looking pretty good. I was declared free of diabetes. I was energetic. I had no more aches. Then the fruit content of my diet crept up. And up. And lo, the blood sugar levels leapt up. Though healthwise I stayed fine. Um, not true. My bp was up.
        So… keto. My bp is back down. No more problems. I allow myself one serving of fruit per week, and two potatoes. Otherwise, my carbs are way-way down. Around 20g a day. Maximum.
        Because my problem was depleted mitochondria, as long as I stay away from anything known to affect it, I seem to be fine. My GP is happy. I officially have not got diabetes.

      2. *insert clapping hands* that is FABULOUS! Hubs is type II autoimmune likely caused by his MS. He had a horrible flare after surgery (486) for a few weeks but our low carb plan is bringing it back down. He’s at about 80-100 carbs/day. When we dip below 80g he starts loosing weight again which is a no-no as he is borderline underweight no (after putting back on 15 lbs. I tell ya life ain’t fair.) I lost the bulk of my weight on Atkins started at 20g worked up to 40. I have to be very careful about the kinds of fat I eat due to inflammation affecting my autoimmune system. I’m at 60 carbs right now working back down to 40 which is where I tend to do best. Thank you so much for the reminder. Upon reflection, I realize that when I feel the best, and most energetic is when I’m on a low carb/grain free dietary plan. I’ll definitely be looking into depleted mitochondria as well.       3. I’m happy if it’s helped.
        There are times I struggle to keep the balance cos I’m not by inclination a fat-eater. But cheese (and English cheese is highly edible!) and butter, and full-fat greek yoghurt… with added cream, and avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil…full avoidance of the seed oils cos they cause inflamation, and depression, being high in omega 6.
