The Road Ahead – Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #6
There it was. The road that lead to Avonlea. Siofra gazed down at the long, long black line through the wastelands. Just last year the old road had blazed it’s trail through the prairie grasses. Lush and green, dotted with wildlife, it had been a beautiful drive. But that was before the Two Day War. Most of the world’s population had perished in two days, millions more in the aftermath. Then had come the nuclear winter and the holocaust summer. Savage wind storms had ripped through the world turning grasslands and forests to deserts.
Siofra removed her goggles to polish them before heading down the mountain. It had been rough coming up to the summit on old game trails, but now she had her bearings. Her power cells would charge quickly in the sun and she hoped with careful rationing she would have enough water to make it across the wastelands. It would be a harsh few days but at the end, she would see home again. Were Momma and Poppa still alive? How had Avonlea fared against the brutal natural disasters and the even more horrific human raids? Siofra replaced her goggles, tightened the holster stay on her aether pistol and kicked her old galvanic scooter to life.
She headed down the side of the mountain toward the black ribbon of old highway with a prayer for safe passage on her lips.
