We are Poets

Written for dverse poets

What is the poetic hum in your life? What hums in the background of your life that inspires you as you unconsciously listen while you work and live? Is the drone always there or do you have to cultivate the inspiration?

We Are Poets

I sit at my desk
and stare at my inbox
how can this be my destiny
to work for a living
staring at cubicle walls
and columns of numbers
I am a poet

We meet at the water cooler
and talk for a moment
she tells me about her garden
blushing as she confesses
that she grows daffodils
and they’re beautiful
She is a poet

At lunch a friend shows
me a picture his wife took
on their last vacation
I can hear the sounds
and smell the rain forest
as he describes the scene
He is a poet

That night I write
about a garden of daffodils
and the sounds and smells
of dirt and moss and water
I write about the magical mundanity
of an ordinary life
I am a poet

Because the most beautiful
things in life
are not things at all
but the tiny precious moments
that we take for granted every day
so find the poetry around you
We are all poets

Til next time ~Peace ~JPP

  1. this is beautiful, the ordinary life is something i appreciate most and you have described it with tenderness and deep reverence. I like how your poetic hum from the mundane creates such beautiful poetry. wonderful and spot on response to the prompt. thank you so much for this.

  2. I love how the mundane world is permeated with poetry in this poem. ‘I am a poet… she is a poet… we are all poets…’ is inclusive and reminds us that there is poetry in everything: daffodils, the rain forest and everyday precious moments.
