For Dylan’s Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie challenge: First Line Friday and the first line is:

This day was summer when the sun shone, and biting winter when clouds overtook the sky, a tumultuous mix of seasons in the span of an afternoon.

The Two Day War

This day was summer when the sun shone, and biting winter when clouds overtook the sky, a tumultuous mix of seasons in the span of an afternoon. The war began on the 13th. By the 15th it was long over leaving survivors struggling through the aftermath. They were calling it the “Two Day War.”

No one knew what really happened, which country had pushed the first button. The war was over but the planet might never recover. The Great Mother shook with mighty earthquakes. She coughed with volcanic eruptions by the score and vomited up great walls of sea water in tsunamis. If the sun shone, the survivors ran for cover from the unfiltered rays that could fry a human brain.

When the biting winds brought relief from the sun’s rays with clouds, they no longer offered their gentle rain. The clouds simply sucked all warmth out of the air and left the survivors shivering. What rain did fall was ice cold but filled with toxic chemicals that sizzled and seared anything it fell upon. Clean water was even more rare than crops and everywhere there was hunger.
