Final Judgment

They traveled in comfortable companionship, talking about their daily lives. The trip had been a welcome break from their scientific work. They sat on the bench and watched the sea; and waited.

Maybe they were wrong. They hoped, but the calculations spoke for themselves. Their peers had called them loonies, said their research was full of holes; but they knew.

They held hands and watched silently as the tectonic shift swallowed up five square miles of beach. It was over for them in an instant, unlike the millions left to wander in the sightless aftermath of mother earth’s final judgment.
