Star began to weep, fat wet tears of silent loss and mourning plopped onto the dry earth where Meldi now rested. She wept, and wept, and the dark clouds gathered. Not clouds of storms or thunder, but wild wet clouds that blanket the world in gentle rain. Star wept, sitting besides the tiny grave as the sky wept with her until her tears were gone. The cathartic release completed, Star left her grief behind and gathered her weapons. Another battle loomed ahead, the Water Guardian still needed them.

Gwren had watched the whole scene, standing not far away, his cloak soaked from the gentle rain of Star’s grief, his fists clenching in frustration.

Xere came and clasped his huge hand in her tiny gentle fingers, “I think she’s ready now.”

“I can’t stand to see her suffer so,” Gwren looked away at the tiny grave, where Star had stood only moments ago. “and be so helpless to stop it. How do we help her Xere?”

“You can’t, I can’t, no one can,” Xere’s sage wisdom rung like a bell in Gwren’s ears. “She had to pass through the veil of grief. She has been cleansed now. Washed clean in the flood of her own tears.” Xere released Gwren’s hand and they turned together back to the others of their company where Star was already preparing to break camp.
