Stream of Consciousness Saturday – television

Our Just Jot it January and Stream of Consciousness Saturday combo prompt is: television.  Brought to us by Pop on over and check out the responses, I know I’m going to.

Hmmm, I don’t quite know what to say about “television.” You see, I’m one of those people, the uninformed, the not-in-the-know, you know those people who haven’t heard about the latest “orange haired clown” fiasco until I either bump across it while searching the internet or somebody mentions it in a blog. I have no idea what “game of thrones” or the latest “naked and afraid” (is there really a show named that? *insert shaking head*) stories are. These are words I have heard from people trying (in vain) to communicate with me. I just don’t watch TV. The last cooking show I watched was “The Galloping Gourmet”, go look it up, yeah it’s been that long and yeah, I’m still pissed off about Firefly.

I remember when it happened. First it was that cold stormy night in 2004 when I flipped through 284 cable TV channels only to find that there was NOTHING I wanted to watch, I called the cable company the next day and canceled my subscription. TV’s death blow came in 2005 when my cardiologist asked me to take a “news fast” to see if we could get my anxiety under control enough to stop my arrhythmia. “No news” he said “no newspaper, no news magazines, no radio broadcasts, and try not to watch TV because the commercials are just killers.” I did it for a week, then a month and ya know what? I’m still on that news fast and my heartbeat is just fine.

I’m a full-time RVer. I have a television which serves as a big DVD player. If I want to watch something I plug in a DVD. In the 12+ years we have been on the road, we have not once hooked up the cable or antenna. Allow me to end with a favorite quote of mine from the Oompa Loompas

“What do you get from a glut of TV
a pain in the neck and IQ of three
Why don’t you try simply reading a book
or can you just not bear to look,
you’ll get not commercials”

That’s all from me, have a happy Saturday.

Til next time ~Peace ~JPP

  1. Wow, it’s so true. I used to hate television because I couldn’t stand the commercials and news. I do binge on some shows on Netflix here and there, but not all the time. I let my toddlers watch youtube through the TV and they’re both spelling out words by the age of 2 1/2 just because there’s so much educational stuff made fun on there. But RV! that must be the life. You must see so many great places. Who needs television when your living the adventures yourself? Good for you. I finally got the Liebster Award posted. Please let me know if you got a notification or not. I linked everything to people’s homepage instead of specific posts so I’m not sure if anyone’s going to know that I nominated them. Thanks!

    1. It’s funny I do watch some “TV” shows, like Castle and Star Trek (original) a couple of episodes one night a week but sans commercials! Which is kind of like watching youtube or netflix but without the internet connection. There is so much cool educational stuff out there now, it’s awesome. Yes, full-time RVing is pretty awesome, I’ve been so many places and seen so much beauty. *sigh* I did not get a notice about the link but the link works fine. You might want to check you nominees, they may not have gotten notices either. Thanks so much for playing along. 😉
