Alice was bored, and tired, and hot. She lay on the grass beneath the shade of the largest tree in the orchard. She was making a daisy chain, watching the other children swimming in the lake. Alice wasn’t allowed to swim alone. Her mother told her stories of children that were captured unaware in the lake and never heard from again. They were taken by the “Ooguay.”
“Can’t we please go swimming Bridgette?” Alice asked quietly, already knowing the answer.
“Well,” her sister replied, “I guess it would do to get a little cooled off. I’ll stay in the shallows and watch you so don’t go out far.”
Alice nodded, quickly shucking out of her over clothing to the swimsuit she wore underneath and raced to the water’s edge.
“Slow down Speedy,” her sister called. “Don’t get taken by the Ooguay!”
Alice waded out just far enough and the dived. She wasn’t afraid of any dumb old lake monster. The Ooguay was supposed to be a giant white turtle with an underbelly of gold who had been terrorizing this lake for centuries.
Somehow that didn’t make sense to Alice, but she shrugged it off.
Suddenly, Alice found herself caught in a whirlpool, being sucked down deeper and deeper. She opened her eyes just in time to see a huge white turtle with a gold shell glide slowly over her, carrying what looked like a pocket watch. She struggled against the burgeoning currents but it was no use, she was sucked down.
Alice opened her eyes to a little room with a small table and many doors. She was completely dry and somehow her swim wear had transformed into a blue dress and white pinafore. “Curiouser and curiouser,” Alice whispered in wonder. To her right hung an extraordinary picture of a giant white turtle with gold shell holding a musical instrument. It appeared to be pointing to something. Alice followed the line of sight and saw a tiny bottle. The label said simply “Drink Me.”
