My offering for the 100-word story challenge:  Tragedy

The Question

Bill walked to the coffee machine and poured three cups. As he placed them on the silver serving tray, he thought of the human couple sitting behind him, so fragile they were. In all his years as a therapeutic empath, he had never grown accustomed to the tragedy of humankind. Still, there was comfort to be found in ritual and closure and he was determined to give it. He served the coffee, took the woman’s hand, gestured to the tiny receptacles behind him and asked the hardest question any human ever answered. “Do you want the brown coffin or the white?”
